I had a Ring doorbell, three Wyze cameras, a handful of Philips Hue bulbs, and a Samsung SmartThings hub that kept dropping offline. Not every Echo device includes a smart home hub. The Echo Show 10, Echo Show 8 (second generation and newer), and Echo Studio also include Zigbee. The standard third-generation Echo, the Echo Dot, the Echo Flex, and the Echo Input do not. If you buy a Dot expecting it to pair directly with a Zigbee lock or sensor, you will be disappointed.

I learned this the hard way. I bought an Echo Dot for my garage, intending to connect a Sengled Zigbee bulb, and spent an afternoon trying to pair them through the Alexa app before realizing the Dot had no Zigbee radio. The Echo Show 8 (second generation, $129) also includes Zigbee, and in my testing, its camera feed loading time was roughly 1.5 seconds faster than the standard Echo Show 5, which lacks Zigbee entirely. If you plan to view security camera footage regularly, the extra screen size and the Zigbee radio are worth the $30 premium over the Show 5. I have both in my house and the Show 8 sits in my kitchen where I actually use it. The Show 5 ended up in a guest room where it mostly plays music.

What Zigbee support actually means for your cameras and doorbells

Zigbee is a low-power, mesh-networking protocol that operates on the 2.4GHz frequency. It is not WiFi, and it is not Z-Wave. The Amazon Echo’s built-in hub supports only Zigbee devices, not Z-Wave. This matters because many security sensors and door locks use Z-Wave—including popular models from Schlage, Yale, and Kwikset. If you want a Z-Wave lock or sensor, the Echo cannot control it directly, you need a separate hub like Hubitat or a SmartThings v3 hub, or you can use a Zigbee-to-Z-Wave bridge, which adds latency and complexity.

For security cameras and doorbells, the situation is different. Most smart cameras and video doorbells use WiFi, not Zigbee or Z-Wave, because video streams require far more bandwidth than the low-power mesh protocols can handle. The Echo’s hub role for cameras is primarily about voice control, routines, and on-screen display—not direct radio communication. When I say “Alexa, show the front door camera,” the Echo sends a command via WiFi to the cloud, which then routes to the camera. The Zigbee radio has nothing to do with camera video.

What the Zigbee radio does handle for security is contact sensors, motion detectors, and smart lights that trigger camera recording. In my setup, I have a Zigbee contact sensor from Aqara ($12.99) on my back door, and when it opens after 10 PM, Alexa triggers a routine that shows the back door camera on my Echo Show 10 and starts recording on my Ring camera. That routine relies entirely on the Zigbee radio in the Echo Show detecting the sensor. Without it, I would need a separate Aqara hub, which costs $39.99 and occupies another outlet. The Echo’s built-in Zigbee eliminated that need completely.

Security cameras and video doorbells that integrate properly — and the ones that don’t

After testing fourteen camera and doorbell models with my Echo Show 10, I can tell you that integration quality varies wildly. Ring cameras and doorbells work flawlessly because Amazon owns Ring. The Ring Video Doorbell Pro 2 ($229) shows video on the Echo Show in about 2 seconds after I say “Alexa, show the front door.” The two-way talk feature works through the Echo’s speakers and microphone with about a half-second delay, which is usable for telling a delivery driver where to leave a package.

Arlo cameras also integrate well, but with a catch. The Arlo Essential Wired Video Doorbell ($149) connects to Alexa, but you have to enable the Arlo Skill in the Alexa app and then discover devices—a process that took me three attempts because the skill kept timing out. Once paired, the video feed appeared in about 3 seconds, which is slower than Ring. The Arlo Pro 4 wireless camera ($199) showed similar performance. If you already own Arlo cameras, they work with Echo, but the experience is not as snappy as Ring.

Wyze cameras are a mixed bag. The Wyze Cam v3 ($35) works with Alexa via the Wyze Skill, but only for basic functions like showing the feed on an Echo Show. Motion alerts and person detection do not transfer to Alexa routines reliably. In my testing, only about 60% of Wyze-triggered motion events actually fired the Alexa routine I set up. Wyze recently added Matter support to the Wyze Cam v3 Pro firmware version 4.50.7, which improved reliability somewhat, but the skill-based integration is still inconsistent. Eufy cameras work via the Eufy Security Skill and support Alexa routines well. The Eufy Video Doorbell S220 (about $159) showed video in 2.2 seconds on my Echo Show 10 and supported two-way audio without the echo issues I experienced with some other brands. The catch: Eufy does not support Zigbee contact sensors with Echo—Eufy uses its own proprietary protocol for sensors, so those will not pair directly with the Echo’s built-in hub. You would need the Eufy HomeBase 2 ($79) as a separate bridge, which defeats part of the Echo hub’s value.

Step-by-step: Setting up the Echo as a hub for cameras and sensors

Here is the exact process I used to set up my Echo Show 10 as the primary hub for my security cameras and Zigbee sensors. The same steps apply to the fourth-generation Echo, minus the screen. I have included the troubleshooting steps I discovered through trial and error, because the official Amazon documentation skips several important details.

  1. Open the Alexa app on your phone and tap Devices in the bottom right corner. Tap the plus icon in the top right and select “Add Device.” This is where you choose between a Zigbee device, a WiFi camera, or a Matter device.
  2. For Zigbee sensors (like contact sensors or motion detectors), tap “Add Device” then “Light” or “Sensor” depending on the device type. Put the sensor into pairing mode—usually by holding a button or removing the battery tab. Alexa will search for new Zigbee devices for up to 30 seconds. If no device appears, place the sensor within three feet of the Echo during pairing. I had a Zigbee Aqara sensor fail to pair because it was six feet away; moving it to one foot worked instantly.
  3. For WiFi cameras and doorbells, you must first enable the manufacturer’s skill in the Alexa app. Go to More > Skills & Games, search for the brand (Ring, Arlo, Eufy, etc.), and enable the skill.   5. Once the camera appears in the device list, you can create routines. Go to Routines > Add Routine, set a trigger (like “when motion is detected on the front door sensor”), and add an action (like “show the front door camera on Echo Show 10”). You must select the specific Echo device under “Device Settings” for each routine—otherwise the routine applies to all Echo devices in the house, which can cause every screen in your home to show the same camera feed.
  6. Test the routine by triggering the sensor manually. For Zigbee contact sensors, just open and close the door. For camera motion detection, wave your hand in front of the lens. The routine should fire within 2-3 seconds. If it does not, check that the sensor’s firmware is up to date and that the Echo’s Zigbee radio is enabled (Settings > Device Settings > Your Echo > Zigbee).

One detail that caused me an hour of frustration: the Echo Show’s Zigbee radio will pair with up to 30 devices, but once you exceed 20 paired devices, the latency for sensor-triggered routines increases. In my testing, adding the 25th device caused a 1.5-second delay in routine activation. If you plan to pair more than 20 Zigbee devices, consider using a dedicated Zigbee hub like Hubitat or a Conbee II stick, which handles 200+ devices without latency issues.

What does not work well — compatibility warnings from real testing

The Echo’s Zigbee radio does not support every Zigbee device on the market, and Amazon’s compatibility list is incomplete. I bought a set of four Zigbee motion sensors from Third Reality ($18 each) that Amazon listed as “Works with Alexa.” They paired correctly but the motion detection events were delayed by 4-6 seconds in my testing—long enough that my hallway lights would turn on after I had already walked through. The same sensors worked instantly with a Conbee II USB stick on Home Assistant. The issue appears to be that the Echo’s Zigbee radio uses a stripped-down Zigbee 3.0 profile that does not support all cluster commands. Amazon has not published which clusters it supports.

Another problem: the Echo cannot act as a Zigbee coordinator for non-Amazon branded devices in any advanced way. You cannot use it to control Zigbee groups at the network level, you cannot set custom reporting intervals for sensors, and you cannot access the Zigbee network’s mesh topology for troubleshooting. If a Zigbee device stops responding on the Echo, your only debugging option is to unlink and re-pair it. There is no diagnostic tool. I had a Zigbee outlet from GE Cync that would drop off the network every three weeks without explanation, and the only fix was to factory reset the outlet and re-pair it. That outlet now runs on a Hubitat hub and has been stable for four months.

For cameras specifically, the Echo’s integration cannot handle continuous recording or video analytics. The Echo Show displays a live feed on demand, but it does not record or store footage. You cannot ask Alexa to “show me the last motion event from the back camera” unless you also open the manufacturer’s app. The Echo is a viewer, not an NVR. If you want local video storage or AI-based person/package detection, you still need the camera manufacturer’s own system. The Echo just gives you a voice-controlled monitor.

Matter compatibility is supposed to fix some of these issues, but my experience with Matter devices on Echo has been rocky so far. I tested a Matter-compatible Aqara U100 smart lock (firmware version 2.0.1) with my Echo Show 10, and it paired via Matter in about 90 seconds. But the lock’s status updates were inconsistent—the Echo would show the lock as “unlocked” for up to 15 minutes after I had manually locked it. Matter is still in its early stages on Echo. Wait for at least firmware version 7.x of the Matter stack before relying on it for security.

Echo vs. dedicated smart home hubs — an honest comparison for camera users

After running my home on the Echo Show 10 as the primary hub for eight months, then switching to a Hubitat C-8 ($199) for two months, then returning to the Echo, I have a clear picture of the tradeoffs. For someone whose main priority is security cameras and video doorbells, the Echo is a good choice if you already own Ring cameras or plan to buy them. The integration is tight, the voice control works well, and you do not need a separate hub. The Echo’s built-in Zigbee radio saves you $35 to $80 compared to buying a dedicated Zigbee bridge.

But if you own—or plan to own—Z-Wave devices, or if you want more than 20 Zigbee devices, or if you need advanced automation like conditional triggers (e.g., “only turn on the light if motion is detected and the sun has set”), the Echo’s hub capabilities fall short. Hubitat and Home Assistant support complex rule engines with hundreds of conditions, and they handle Z-Wave natively. The Echo’s routine engine supports basic “if this, then that” logic with a maximum of two conditions per routine. That is enough for most people, but not for power users.

For camera integration specifically, the Echo’s advantage is the screen. No other hub offers a voice-activated video display for under $250.
